Declaration of Insurance
Insurance contracts are complex documents for you to understand. Frequently, they have a lot of pages to get protected, the insured and the insurer, both. Contracts are full of entangled legal terms that could sound like gibberish, but they are not actually designed to be light reading. To make things easier, the main aspects of the policy and data about both parties, the policyholder and the insurance provider, could be abridged in a declaration of insurance. It is a one-paged document highlighting these points of the insurance policy, the insured, and the insurer.
Which Information Could Be Contained in A Declaration of Insurance?
The information included in an insurance declaration could widely differ from one insurance company to another. This data could vary according to the laws that regulate insurance documentation in each state. Nevertheless, you could find all the aspects detailed below, or some of them, in your declaration of insurance:
- The name and address of the insured: You should verify this data and see if it is right. In case it is incorrect or it changes, you should update the insurance company.
- The name and address of the insurance provider: In case you need to make a claim, you could use this information to contact your insurance provider. When it changes, the company should try to provide you with the new information.
- Additional details to contact your insurance company: In this aspect, you could find the e-mail and website addresses and customer contact phone numbers. You could also find some elements about how to make a claim after an accident here.
- The aim of the policy and aspects it covers: Here you might find the main terms and conditions of your insurance policy, described in general. In the full contract, they are explained in detail.
- The period when the policy is valid: You could see the validity period of your coverage here. Your policy will not cover an event outside this range.
- Endorsements, additions, changes, and discounts: Here you could find all further pertinent data concerning the terms and conditions of your insurance policy.
Could the Declaration Be Considered Proof of My Insurance?
Declaration of insurance doesn’t constitute proof of your insurance. The document that does so will be sent to you by your insurance provider, separately and regularly, in the form of an insurance card. The insurance declaration is an easy way to present you the main aspects of your insurance policy and help in case you need to make an auto insurance claim. It has no legal worth when you need to show proof of insurance.
If you are driving without proof of insurance, you should immediately contact your insurance provider in order to get it. If you are involved in an accident (and in other situations), you should provide proof of insurance.
